Reconciliation in early childhood professional learning package

This module introduces the richness and diversity of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art. We explore ways educators and young children can approach art appreciation and art-making inspired by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art. We also look at some specific art works and the contemporary artists behind them.

Join gallery educator Jo Krabman in a exploration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art and discover ways that educators can encourage children to create and think critically about art and the art-making process. Featuring video interviews with artists, gallery curators and early childhood educators, this module will provide a range of strategies, tools and resources that you can use to develop young children’s understanding of artworks.

Learning outcomes

In this course you will explore:

• some general concepts that underpin an understanding of all art forms
• a range of strategies, tools and resources that educators can use to develop their own and young children’s understanding of art works
• how to apply general art concepts to a deeper understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander visual arts
• how to explore children’s art and some examples of educators using reflective, respectful art practice with children.

This module provides an overview of Australia’s Indigenous history and contemporary society. It also explains how personal knowledge and beliefs impact on your experience of Reconciliation. Your knowledge and beliefs form the foundation for building Reconciliation in your service. The module features interviews with Indigenous and non-Indigenous educators and experts, and practical information and strategies.

Reconciliation in action - Part 2

This module supports educators to learn and teach about Indigenous culture and reconciliation with children. Reconciliation through early childhood education and care can be extremely powerful, as it promises to change the futures of all children in Australia. The module features interviews with Indigenous and non-Indigenous educators and experts, and practical information and strategies.

NAIDOC Week is a nationally significant annual event that celebrates the achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. This module will provide early learning professionals an opportunity to consider how they engage with and celebrate NAIDOC Week in their local community context. It shares the stories of two services and their approach to NAIDOC Week, including how the week forms part of their approach to embedding Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives in their everyday programs.

Engaging in this module will help participants deepen their practice by reflecting on the two stories and considering their own approach to NAIDOC Week.
