Connecting with babies

By Marilyn Fleer and Pam Linke

Connecting with babies is for all who are entrusted with the care of babies in their first year or so. It is an invitation to us to focus on ourselves and our interactions and relationships with babies and to think about how we provide the right environments that support their development and learning and build strong foundations.

The links to the Early Years Learning Framework make this a useful resource for educators working in early childhood education and care settings, but of course most infants and babies are first and foremost family members and so it is relevant to parents and other family carers as well.

Connecting with babies presents information about what is important for babies and gives some ideas about how to put into practice:

  • what the research says about infants and their development
  • the importance of relationships
  • developing a sense of agency
  • play suggestions for babies from birth to 12 months.
