Description

I have something to say

Facilitating children’s participation is an important part of our work in early childhood. Having voice and influence empowers children, connects them to their community, and acknowledges their rights as citizens. However, it has not always been clear how we can support children to enact their participation rights in our everyday practice. This Research in Practice Series book presents an introduction to children’s participation in the Australian early childhood context and outlines strategies to support children to participate meaningfully in decision-making relevant to their home, the early childhood setting and their community.

This book is about:

  • why children’s participation is important
  • how to use the Lundy model of child participation to ensure children engage in authentic, meaningful participation in decision-making.

To support children’s participation is to embark on a journey. It begins with finding meaningful subject matter, planning early childhood spaces to support agency and build capability, and ensuring children are informed through opportunities to build knowledge. Children need time to build relationships with people who influence their contexts, and they need space to refine and develop their ideas so that they become increasingly relevant and useful. This book provides an overview of practical strategies to support this process at each stage of the journey.
