This course supports anyone working in education and care settings to understand the difference between inappropriate discipline and positive behaviour guidance. Aligned with the National Quality Framework, it covers legal responsibilities, child-safe practices and effective strategies that respect each child’s dignity and support their social and emotional development. This course includes an assessment, and it is recommended that educators complete the course annually.

Description

This course supports education and care professionals in understanding their legal and ethical responsibilities when guiding children’s behaviour. Grounded in the National Quality Framework (NQF), this course highlights the importance of creating safe, respectful and inclusive environments where children can thrive. Participants will explore the difference between appropriate guidance and inappropriate discipline, with a strong focus on the practical application of positive, strengths-based behaviour guidance strategies. This course outlines relevant legislative requirements, including notification of serious incidents, and the training obligations of services under the National Law and Regulations.

Designed to fit within a framework of training and support that builds a child-safe culture, this course includes explicit examples of inappropriate discipline and practices, reflective questions and an assessment. It is recommended that every person working in education and care completes this training every 12 months to maintain up-to-date knowledge and promote consistent, child-centred practice across the service.
